Mary Margaret Lucas

March 13, 1932 — January 23, 2025

Maximo

Mary Margaret Lucas age 92, passed away Thursday, January 23, 2025 at St. Joseph Care Center in Louisville following declining health. Mary was born March 13, 1932 in the small rural town of Maximo, Ohio, daughter of the late Joseph H. and Helen M. (Monter) Polus. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Maximo and was active in the church’s Altar and Rosary Society.

Mary attended St. Joseph Parochial two room school and graduated from 8th grade in a class of five students. From there she attended Notre Dame Academy in Cleveland with the intention of being a Nun. However, in her junior year, God presented another path. Mary’s father was electrocuted in an industrial accident, and she returned home where she finished her senior high school year and graduated from Alliance. Mary started working at Perskeys grocery store in order to help with family expenses and to buy her own clothes for school. She worked her way up through different departments, advancing to cashier and office bookkeeping. In 1976, Mary and her husband Jim opened their own business in Maximo, the Kountry Korner Market. In addition to running a business for over 20 years and being a meticulous homemaker, Mary enjoyed golfing, playing the accordion with local groups, needlepoint, quilting, reading and doing puzzles and of course watching her favorite baseball team, the Guardians

Mary is survived by her brother, Joseph (Barbara) Polus; stepdaughter, Kristi (James) Upperman; two stepsons, J.D. (Kelly) Lucas and Joseph (Diana) Lucas; nephew, Joseph (Ann) Polus; niece, Kelly (Vincent) Russoniello; along with four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; a great niece and a great nephew.

Beside her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, James D. Lucas in 2014 and her sister, Theresa A. Polus in 2022 and her beloved Aunt “Belle” Monter.
